Just a quick reminder that this years Annual Picnic will take place at the tennis courts in the park on September 25th. We will start serving BBQ around 5 o'clock and will show a movie once it gets dark. Hope to see you there!
There have a few more break-ins in the area of Bluejay Dr and Skylark Dr. There have been at least one house break-in and one car break-in reported. And the other week on Kingfisher Dr, some of the cars that were left unlocked were searched through in the middle of the night.
Please call the police if you see anything suspicious. They have told us many times they would rather come out for something innocent than to have another crime committed.
Come meet your neighbors and enjoy a family friendly movie!
When: Saturday July 3rd and Satuday, August 7th
Time: At Sundown - we'll start as soon as it is dark!
Where: The Tennis Courts at Canoas Park
Bring: A blanket or lawn chair
Children *MUST* be accompanied by an adult!
Popcorn and movie provided by the Canoas Garden Neighborhood Association
CGNA regrets to inform you about the passing of Matt Vlajovich early this morning. Matt had been in pour health since late Januari when his wife Ann went missing. Ann was found beginning of April in the mountains of Santa Cruz, without any indication of foul play.
The third Annual Garage Sale is planned for May 1st. The social committee will put out flyers in the weeks before the garage to remind you to clean out your garage!

Last night, the Canoas Garden Neighborhood Association held an emergency meeting to talk about the recent burglaries in the neighborhood, together with representation from councilmember Pierluigi Oliverio's office (Danell Fedor), the Neighborhood Watch program (Dirk Parsons), and the San Jose police department (Lieutenant Gordy Bowen and Sergeant Scott Johnson). From the neighborhood, we had overwhelming turnout, some 150-200 concerned neighbors showed up - it was so busy that some people had standing room only.
All members of the Board would like to thank all people that showed up. It clearly impressed the officials that were there and we made it clear to them that the events in the past few months really concerns our neighborhood.
A lot of good information was passed out, and I have updated the Community Information pages, especially the City and County pages now have a lot of helpful phone numbers. Barb Medina has made detailed notes, and Gary has information on all the names and titles - once I get those I will post them here.
Some notes I made, mainly from Dirk Parsons presentation about the Neighborhood watch program:
- Through sjpd.org, you can get to a map of crime reports on or between specific dates in our neighborhood. If you click on the icon on the map, it will pop up a window with more details on the report.
- Most break-ins happen between the hours of 10am-4pm, when people are out of the house working or running errands
- Most break-ins happen through open doors or open windows. Especially doors and windows that are in the back of the house, invisable from the street are popular
- Most break-ins are very opportunistic. If the situation is not just right, the burglar will try the next house on the street
- Close and lock all doors and windows when you leave the house
- Purchase and install good deadlocks on the front door, the garage side door, and the door between the garage and the house
- Install an alarm system (You don't need a city permit to do so)
- Place a portable radio at the frontdoor and adjust it on just loud enough to be heared from outside. Turn it on when you leave the house.
- Purchase fake alarm stickers and place them around the house (not as good as a real alarm system, but still a deterrant.)
- Bolt/Lock the door on the side of the house to your backyard if you are not using it
- Have dogs in the house
- Purchase timers for when you are not home. Put one in the living room and let it turn off when you normally go to bed. Put another one in the bedroom, and let that one turn on when the living room light turns off. Also, you can put the radio on a timer to play during the day.
- Automatic Light System in your front drive way
The equivalent of calling 911, but directly connected to the San Jose Police Departemt is 277-8911. You are advised to program this number in your cell phone to always have it handy (I just did!)
Slightly related, last night there were some reports from neighbors that a young woman is going door-to-door over the last few weeks, promising to clean your rugs for free. She is very persistant and wants to have a look at your rugs inside the house. Please deny this, and call the police (277-8911) as soon as this happens.
Concluding
Together we can get control of the situation before it escalates further. Please be vigilant and report any suspicious behavior in the neighborhood. If you see youngsters you don't recognize on your street, and they go door to door testing out fence doors, etc, please report it.
Paraphrasing the police lieutenant last night: they'd rather get 100 phone calls about something that turns out to be innocent, than to not get the call that could catch the bad guys. If something happens that makes the hairs in the back of your neck rise up because it is suspicious, please don't shrug it off, but report it to the police immediately!
You can find the newest news letter here, with information about the new Board of Directors, neighborhood committees and some of the building projects around our neighborhood.

A new year, with numerous new exciting events planned! Let's go through them:
- Christmas trees - The neighborhood looked very beautiful with the trees lining up on all our streets. The Social Committee is very pleased with the outcome and is planning to order Christmas trees for the neighborhood again. This will happen around October, approximately.
- Annual Meeting - Back on January 27th, the neighborhood elected a new Board at the Annual Neighborhood Meeting. See the members of the new board here.
- Garage Sale - The second Annual Garage Sale is planned for May 9th. The social committee will put out flyers in the weeks before the garage to remind you to clean out your garage.
- Neighborhood Watch Program - Tony and Diana Leaman held a very successful get-together to inform the east end of Hummingbird Dr. The San Jose Police Department gave a presentation about the Neighborhood Watch program and supplied a lot of good information. If you are interested in organizing a similar meeting for your street, you can contact Bill Aaron (ph: 978-9678) or Tony Leaman (ph: 264-1372).

A picture of the sign that advertised the first new houses in our neighborhood. This sign was across the Old Almaden Road from the end of Redbird Drive. Meadowbrook was the name of the development on Kingfisher, Hummingbird and Redbird Drives, circa 1956. |
